a game played in Italy in DB’s day and long thereafter!

From one side they looked to the glory of beating Don Bosco; from the other they rejoiced because they were sure of victory!’ – all in reference to DB playing barrarotta with them in the courtyard.

Interesting to note that Don Bosco had once vowed (when he took on the clerical habit) to give up playing barrarotta, among other pursuits.  From a comment in MB III, 216-7 it is obvious he did not hold to that once at The Oratory!

A Salesian traditional story not recounted before the writing of the Memoirs of the Oratory in the mid 1870’s but first recounted in Bonetti’s serialized version in the Salesian Bulletin 1879.

The story lends belief to the symbolic date of December 8th for the beginning of Don Bosco’s work.  In the original draft for MO Don Bosco had begun to write an N not a G for the surname.  Did this mean Nome, or was it another surname?  For the purposes of the story it doesn’t matter.

Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice

362vecchi.txt - Il 28 settembre scorso nella 5Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice ho consegnato il crocifisso a 33 nuovi missionari.

IT Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, Basilica of Valdocco EN-EN In a dream, Don Bosco saw  a Church on which was written the Latin: Haec est domus mea, inde gloria mea.  This is my house, from whence glory will shine forth.  When he built the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, at Valdocco, this inscription was written on the facade. Often in Salesian contexts reference is simply to the Basilica of/at Valdocco.

It was consecrated on 9th June 1868.

In 2004 the Rector Major made an appeal to the Salesian Family for a major restoration of the Basilica.

beatification

EN-EN

ZH

As a term, it was introduced in 15th Century.  From 18th Century it became obligatory before canonisation. A curious fact - the new legislation of 1983 (Paul VI) does not once mention beatification!  It would seem that there are not two processes, one for beatification and one for canonisation - instead only for the latter.

A Blessed cannot be the titular of a church nor can an altar be dedicated to a Blessed without permission from the Holy See.

The term is almost always found in the plural both in Italian and English with obvious reference to the Beatitudes in the NT account.  Then there is the more recent youthful beatitudes referred to in contemporary Salesian literature.

The term has special resonance for Salesians of the 20th and 21st centuries because of the Hill of the Beatitudes – proclaimed as such by Pope JP II at Colle on the occasion of the beatification of Laura Vicuña

Cf. beatificazione for further comment.  Note, though, that Blesseds does not sound well in English, since Blessed is normally considered to be an adjective.  Perhaps Beati is the way to go.  Blesseds is in use, however, if one looks at websites of religious Congregations and the Vatican website.

380chavez2.txt -  1.1.1 Ripartendo da Cristo Buon Pastore,

IT (The) Good Shepherd EN-EN An image at the heart of the Salesian spirit and especially the spirit of bontà and fatevi amare. The image appears in Don Bosco's dream at age 9, so in this sense is a foundational image.

The Salesian contemplates the mystery of Christ through this image.

Also an image developed in the Salesian magisterium by Fr Viganò (e.g. AGC 334)

Art. 11, 15 of the Constitutions.

The perpetually professed Salesian receives a medallion depicting the Good Shepherd on one side and 'Make yourself loved' on the other.
