terms marked with
† are
often without further comment. They come from the experience of people who have
translated large tracts of Salesian literature, e.g. Fr Borgatelli’s translation
of the Memorie Biografiche. In other words most of these terms are dated ones,
found only or mainly in older Salesian texts.

The term is relatively recent in Salesian writing – after Vat. II and in GC
23 (1990) especially where it speaks of a new humanism. |
Salesians readily recognise the Christian humanism of
Francis de Sales and
of Don Bosco with its optimism, openness to the
world, but its equally
strong emphasis on charity toward human beings. Salesian humanism is a term
that implies everything positive in the life of people, in things, in
history. For the Salesian Sisters
it also means a special understanding of
the place of women in the world and in society and in the Salesian mission
(e.g. the Auxilium in Rome, which works at the promotion of women in the
world and the Church; VIDES, the international Salesian development agency). |

‘Renditi forte, umile, robusto’: so says DB in MO describing what the Woman
said to him in his first dream at 9 years of age. |
‘Be strong, humble and brave’. What are we to make of the fact that in the
very first version DB had written "sano, forte e robusto" then crossed out
sano and put umile? Cerrato (Vi Presento Don Bosco LDC 2005) says that DB
would have 'heard' these words in Piedmontese as "san, fort e robust', the
first meaning well-behaved, of good conduct, the second, strong, the third
courageous. His choice in Italian of 'umile' then, seems more a making
clear of how a 9 year old could be good. |

The term is characteristic of the language of Fr Viganò. It is, of course,
found in the SDB Constitutions art. 12, 95 and elsewhere either in those
exact words or similar (communion with God). |
