148th Salesian Missionary Expedition - God is always with his missionaries

Among the 22 Salesians - members of the 148th missionary expedition is also one Chinese Salesian from Hong Kong. His destination is 'Project Europe' - Great Britain Province (GBR). Cl. Anthony share his experience after two weeks of the new missionary course:

"Immediately after my perpetual profession in Hong Kong last 16 August 2017, I prepared for my journey to Rome for the course for missionaries ad gentes. I am part of 148th Salesian Missionary expedition. I feel truly blessed! I thank God for calling me to be a missionary and for making me as one of His instruments to proclaim the good news—sharing His love and joy to those who have not yet known Him, most especially the young people.

As I go on with our missionary course, I realize all the more how amazing this Salesian Missionary vocation is! We are all from different continents, different countries, and with different culture-background and languages. The fact that we are all different does not prevent us to gather together as a family. There is marked closeness to each other. I believe this is because of the love of God. We were all called by Him to be Salesians. We are living the same vocation in different beautiful ways or styles.

Last two years, I had a chance to spent my practical training in West Africa (AFW Province: Ghana-Nigeria-Sierra Leone-Liberia) to experience missionary life. I realized how blessed are the missionaries because God is always with them, and He grants them abundant graces, He accompanies them on their missionary vocation journey. Surely, I had encounter a lot of difficulties and challenges which I have not experienced before but I felt that God was always with me. His presence gave me strength and courage to overcome the trials along the way. As our Salesian priest, missionary - protomartyr, Saint Calistus Caravario said, “without the grace of God, I cannot do anything; and what I have done is done by God.”

We are now half-way in this month-long missionary course. Through the formation given by experienced missionaries and their sharing about cultures, inculturation, missiology, etc., I am equipped to become a Salesian missionary. Aside from the discussions and sharing, we also have pilgrimages to Holy Places in Rome such as the Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul. These where were the historical places where they proclaimed the Gospel, buried or killed.

The pilgrimage allowed me to have a deeper personal reflections on their lives as great followers of Jesus. I gained insight on how they offered their lives for His Kingdom and the salvation of all people. They are really the great models for missionaries. I learned a lot from them. This particular verse in Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans comes to me as an encouragement and inspiration, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15).

As Salesian Missionaries, we also need to heighten our missionary enthusiasm and determination. We visited the places that are dear to Don Bosco (from his childhood to his death) to understand more about his missionary motivation and spirit. I enjoy so much the sharing sessions we have everyday. With faith and humility, we are learning from each other, and we are growing in faith together in the presence of God. The Word of God inspires us and disposes us to meditate on the missionary life. Its truly a wonderful experience to be part of and live as a community with this beautiful 148th missionary expedition. The love of God is the greatest key for such closeness and encounter. As a missionary, I deeply realized that I am not going to the new culture, new country to changes, transform or convert them. I am just a human being a mere instrument. It is only God who can transform and convert them. The most important thing for the missionary to do is to let the people experience His Love and guide them towards a closer relationship with God… to make Him known. But before that, I, myself, must have this beautiful experience with God, so that I will be able to accompany them in their own journey towards finding Him in their lives.

The 148th expedition of Salesian Missionaries will be receiving the missionary cross from the hands of the 10th successor of Don Bosco on 24th September in the Mary Help of Christians Basilica. From there, each and everyone of us will go to our destinations to proclaim His Good news to the world.
I will be sent to United Kingdom (GBR province), as a missionary for Project Europe. We need more prayers to strengthen and support us, please pray for us that we may be holy and strong missionaries.

INIZIO

Purpose of the Course: The enthusiasm and faith of the missionary who goes to
the missions are not enough, even if they remain fundamental criteria. It is essential
that the missionary, even if he goes only for a few years, makes a careful examination
of the reasons for his going to the missions. On the other hand, it is important that the
departing missionary is provided the necessary tools to encounter a new people and
take on the personal attitude of openness, which is respectful and trusting towards the
‘other’ in order to foster a pleasant, efficient, humble and discreet presence. Certainly
the missionary is a gift and a blessing, he brings new strength and vitality to the
Province and the local Church; the richness of his faith and culture and his own
personal gifts enrich the Province and the local Church, but without adequate
preparation the newcomer could actually become a disturbance or un uncomfortable
presence because he is incapable of fostering mutual dialogue with the new reality.

The Orientation Course for New Missionaries is envisioned as an immediate
preparation of the departing missionaries. It is through prayer, witness of life, sharing
of experiences, personal reflections and through a joyful life with other course
participants that the new missionary is helped in verifying, deepening and sometimes
even discovering the fundamental reasons for his going to the missions.
The orientation course for new missionaries is intended primarily to be formation
(foster values and attitudes necessary for a missionary) not information (acquisition
of new knowledge or ideas)!

Presuppositions: The preparation for missionary life begins years before in the
home Province of the missionary, where the candidate is accompanied in discerning
his suitability and the necessary qualities leading to the option for missionary life.
The home Province of the missionary has the commitment to provide the departing
missionary an opportunity to take part in meetings or courses for departing
missionaries, if they are organised in the country of origin.

The Missions Department has published the Missionary Formation of the Salesians
of Don Bosco as essential guidelines on the path leading to the choice of candidate
for the missions. A confrere who has difficulty in integrating in the ordinary life of
the community in his home Province is not meant to be a missionary for the culture
shock and the new and more challenging environment in the missions will not only
not help solve these problems, they might even aggravate it.

The Province which receives the new missionary has also the commitment to guide
and foster the integration of the new missionary in his new cultural social and
ecclesial context. This requires an assiduous initial accompaniment. This means,
above all, ensure that he has a spiritual guide and, during the early years, a
missionary who could accompany him on his first steps in missions. It is also
essential that within a year in the missions the new missionary is given the
opportunity to participate in courses organised by local church or conference of
religious to better understand the local culture and promote a proper inculturation.

Prerequisites: To benefit from the course, each participant needs to make the
necessary preparation before coming to the orientation course, and in particular to
prepare the following written work:
1) A brief presentation of the essential elements and characteristics of one’s own
culture, including those which need to be healed, ennobled and perfected;
2) A brief presentation of the country where he will work as a missionary
(geography, culture, social and political situation);
3) A brief presentation of the Salesian Province and of the local Church of his
new mission.
The easy access to the internet makes these preliminary work indispensable
prerequisites in order to participate in this course to ensure that it becomes a truly
educative experience.

Methodology: The course will use the modular approach
1
and the workshop
method
2
. Each module will have four components: a) the personal experience b)
listening and evaluating through the input, c) personal reflection and sharing d) the
re-formulation of one’s own personal understanding on the topic. As components of
the methodology great importance is also given to the sharing the Word and the
preparation of their daily journal that which helps each participant to reread his
personal experiences in the light of the topic(s) of the day. Several other activities
will be organised (e.g. sports, visits, programmes, meetings with other Salesians in
initial formation, etc..) to foster interaction and inter-cultural exchange among
participants.

Recipients : The participants are the new missionaries, the majority of whom are
young postnovices who have little or no theological training and pastoral experience.
A few will have a previous missionary experience. The vast majority has no
command of Italian thus translations will have to be made.

Human Resources: Fr. Guillermo Basañes (Councillor for the missions), Fr.
Gianni Rolandi (course coordinator), Fr. Martín Lasarte, Fr. George

1
A module is a self-contained unit of learning whose expected result is set out as a number of learning outcomes
which are described in terms of a series of measurable achievements in the form of personal reflections, practical
reports, illustrations, and so on.

2
The «workshop method» is an active teaching method where the primary role of educator is to motivate students
to learn on their own methods and techniques for finding, discovering and mastering pre-determined knowledge
that is deemed important. It focuses on participatory, hands-on learning; small-group activity; pair and small-
group discussions. It does not focus on the Lecturer telling students information but in essentially creating
learning experiences that guide, direct, and facilitate the acquisition of new knowledge by the learner.
