Don Bosco University launches MA in Convergent Media
 Starting its seventh academic year, Assam Don Bosco University, (ADBU) launched, on July 31, a new postgraduate degree program, a Masters in Mass Communication. The first batch of 12 students includes eight men and four women.
Two other new postgraduate degree programs launched this year include a Masters in Philosophy and Physics. “It is amazing that this path-breaking new course has been received enthusiastically by students who want to delve into social media as their professional option,” says the Vice-Chancellor of ADBU, commenting on the overwhelming response for the program which received 17 applicants not only from India but also Myanmar and Sudan.
Christened as an MA degree in Convergent Media and Technologies, the course, the first of its kind offered in India, has attracted students not only from Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya, but also from distant states like Rajasthan, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
The Additional Chief Secretary, the Principal Secretary of the Finance and Tourism Departments and Principal Resident Commissioner of Assam, Mr H.S. Das, after addressing the inauguration of the academic year 2014-15 at the university’s School of Technology and Social Sciences campus at Azara, took time to inaugurate the new classroom for Convergent Media studies.
“We are offering brand new programs to reach out to a wide section of eager students in northeast India, in new areas of study like philosophy, science, and availing ourselves of cutting-edge social media through convergent media and technologies,” says Vice-Chancellor Dr Stephen Mavely, offering the rationale for the new courses.
The postgraduate degree program takes students through hands-on exercises in news reporting for social media, public relation exercises, advertising gimmicks, and media research while trying their hand at bringing a video production from script to screen.
“The new media platforms – Blog, Twitter, YouTube, Podcast, Facebook and other social media networks are so varied, pervasive, influential and fast-changing that it is a continuous challenge to keep pace with the latest trends in media-related industries,” said the Head of the Mass Communication department, Fr C.M. Paul, during the three-hour-long solemn ceremony.
Soon after the inauguration, the students had a two day joint induction program together with the department of Educational Leadership in the newly furnished class room.

Conclusion of the Giffoni Film Festival
 The 44th Giffoni Film Festival came to a conclusion with the award of the Creative Pathways prize to the Lithuanian Film "The Excursionist". This famous festival has a jury of about 3,000 children from 26 nations. New features have been added to the traditional Creative Pathways workshop which gives its name to the prize, awarded this year for the eighth time.
One is these new features was the involvement of about forty young people aged between eight and twelve who were not part of the jury of the film event, but performed as clowns in the main square of the town.
Another new activity involved the parents who accompanied the jury members. With the support of teachers in the Salesian Pontifical University, Fr Renato Butera and Fr Antonio Dellagiulia conducted workshops on knowledge of the media, new and old, and on dialogue between parents and their adolescent children.
It all takes place under the direction of the National Association of Youth Socio-Cultural Cinema Circles. These three activities have a single purpose which is to speak about Jesus through media such as cinema and the expressive arts. What is of great value is the collaboration between different Church bodies. This is true especially in the two local parishes of St Lawrence and St Annunziata, thanks to their parish priest, Fr Alessandro. Among the groups involved are the Italian Association of St. Paul and the National Association of Youth Socio-Cultural Cinema Circles in collaboration with the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, and the Salesian Pontifical University.
The initiative has been positive and there already some ideas as to how we can do even better next year as we mark the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco.

Animation - Letter from Fr Filiberto
Dear friends of the Soc Com,
On 16th of August, the Rector Major, Don Ángel Fernández Artime had officially opened the Bicentennial year at Colle Don Bosco with the celebration of the Eucharist, thanking God for the gift of Don Bosco to the Church and to humanity. I suppose the same was done in your Provinces. Comgratulations!
I'm sure you've already announced to the Salesians, Salesian Family and the Media, all of these important events that will take place this year until the 16th of August 2015 The timely, creative, careful and collaborative dissemination of information must be the hallmark our service throughout the year.
On the other hand the different media also talk much about Don Bosco, of the Congregation, of the Salesian charism and the Salesian mission in your provinces and countries, I invite you then to have a historical documentation, as a hard copy and digital archive, of everything that is written, spoken or filmed about this event in your country. The Social Communications sector, together with the Provincial Secretary and historical commission need to create a well-organized archive of the Bicentennial.
It is good to remember another point of great importance for us as a Congregation and the Salesian Family: The Year of Consecrated Life, whose opening is scheduled for November 21, 2014, the day the world 'Pro Orantibus," and its closing in November 2015 . This is an opportunity for a communicative opening even bigger and deeper with other congregations and institutes and for the Church in general.
I conclude by inviting you to be near, in prayer and by information, to our confreres and non-Salesians, who are with the people of God and with young people in the countries where there is war, persecution of Christians, and Ebola .

Information: The Bicentenary is also on Twitter
Greeting Don Bosco and letting the world know that 16 August is his birthday: this is the meaning behind a range of initiatives around the world with the idea of making the Bicentenary theme “trend” on Twitter. So … #HappyBirthdayDonBosco!
“200 years ago he started a trend. This year let's make him trend. #HappyBirthdayDonBosco”. This has been the campaign launched by young Salesians in the Philippines.
The campaign refers to Twitter trends, the most-discussed issues of the day: words or short combinations of words preceded by a hashtag (#) governed by an algorithm – largely unknown – of Twitter's which measures quantity and speed of phrases at a particular moment.
Young Salesians in the Philippine North province (postnovitiate and theologate communities, along with may of their young friends),launched this campaign to make Don Bosco and the Bicentenary trend on Twitter for his 199th birthday. They invite the whole world to take part.
There should be no surprise that it is young Filipinos doing this, given that a worldwide study published last month indicates that “Filipinos use social media 11 hours more than the worldwide average!”
Amongst other hashtags promoted around the Salesian world in view of the Bicentenary and to greet Don Bosco, is also: #BicentenarioDonBoscoand #db2015.

Information: Salesian personography
There is biography and hagiography. Now there is also Salesian “personography,“ a word coined by the authors of a new service. As announced at the end of June, the digital edition of the Salesian Sources in English now features a rich "personography" which allows web surfers to easily find information and details about all the people that are mentioned in the Salesian Sources.
It is a resource available exclusively for the digital version of the sources, provided through an XML document, enabling access to the vast world of Linked Data. It ensures that research on these people is more easily incorporated into the Salesian sources.
There are two main ways to use this personography:
Wherever you happen to be reading, if you come across a name – coded in dark red – you can click on it and find a short biography of the subject.
Conversely, if instead you want to learn more about a group of people in a particular category, you can use the Quick Reference - first level Assistance, or the Main Table of Contents to access the Personography, where you can find the possible groupings. For example:
• close associates of Don Bosco in the early days of the Oratory;
• first vocations from the Oratory;
• young people who attended the Oratory;
• young people with whom Don Bosco was in correspondence;
• the (Italian)Royal family;
• noble families ...
The Personography document may take a few minutes to download but , once opened, it is very easy to use.

Production: The musical Gracias Don Bosco provides us with materials to work on during the bicentennial year
 The posters, the 20 songs in MP3 format, the music with or without vocals, the scripts in French, English and Spanish and formative notes available for deepening throughout the bicentennial year: these are some of the materials made available by the organizers of the musical "Gracias Don Bosco", that can be used by all the Provinces and Vice Provinces who want to avail of them. The Musical will be officially presented January 24, 2015.
“Don Bosco,born in Italy on 16 August 1815, could never have imagined that on the vigil of his bicentenary, in a city in southern Spain, a cast made up of more than a hundred persons from Salesian presences would come together to say thanks, through music, for the work with the young that he carried out during his lifetime”. These were the words used to announce the presentation of this musical last February.
Among the materials available to us are:
• An index that includes 20 research topics, as well as the specific notes for children, teens, and young adults. Each of these topics include a presentation and contextualization by themes and develops each of them through specific activities and questions for reflection.
• 20 songs in MP3 format, with a music-only version - with and without vocals - to be used depending on the need; and the lyrics of all the songs.
• The script, including the musical score, not only in Spanish but also in English and French. And, for the Spanish communities, also in Catalan, Basque and Galician languages.
The musical "Gracias Don Bosco - soñar tu mismo sueño" (Thank you, Don Bosco – To dream your very same dream) is made available by the provinces of Spain so that the project can be extended to the whole Salesian world, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of the father and teacher of youth.

Production: Fr. Guillermo Basañes in Shillong releases a new Missionary Bulletin
 Fr. Guillermo Basañes, the Salesian General Councillor for Missions, was on a visit to the province of Silchar from 2-6 August 2014. On 3 August he released a new missionary animation bulletin, “ANIMA”, a new initiative of the missionary animation team in South Asia, and the first one of its kind in the Salesian South Asian region.
Archbishop Dominic Jala, Archbishop (Emeritus) Thomas Menamaparampil, Salesian Provincials of New Delhi, Dimapur and Silchar and a large number of Salesians and young people accorded a warm welcome to Fr Basañes at Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong. Among the the participants there were also the Salesians who took part in the 2nd Inter Regional Salesian Missionary Animation program.
During the release of ANIMA, Fr TC George, the Regional Delegate for missionary animation, pointed out that “the purpose of the bulletin is missionary animation, networking, communication and empowerment in the region of South Asia. It aims at promoting missionary thinking and missionary commitment in the region for the Salesians.”
Fr. TC George who is also the editor of the bulletin explains in his editorial that the name ANIMA is an acronym for “Action Network In Missionary Animation”, while it could also be a shorter form of “Animation” which means “giving spirit”, “empowering” and “educating”.
The features in the first issue of the bulletin include messages from Fr Basañes and Fr Maria Arokiam Regional, South Asia Councillor, and other features as missionary reflection, missionary experiences, prayer mission, Rector Major’s appeal for the missionary expedition, news, etc.
The first issue is dedicated to St. Thomas, the apostle of Christ and the first missionary to the region. Each issue will be dedicated to a missionary saint, announced the Editor.
On 4 August Fr Basañes conferred Ministries of Lector and Acolyte during a mass in the recently renovated Shrine of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Shillong. 18 candidates became Lectors and 24 became Acolytes.
In the homily Fr Basañes exhorted the candidates to “read the signs of the times” and to be “simply available” to people, especially to young people in their every need. Stating that the need of the hour is not “technical liturgist” nor “mechanical priest” but “Salesians with heart similar to that of Jesus the Good Shepherd”, he challenged the candidates to priesthood.

Preservation: Port Morseby and the 'Our Culture, Our Treasure,
Papua New Guinea - Port Morseby. July, 27, 2014. The Don Bosco Technical Institute held "Our Culture, Our Treasure," among the students, a contest about explaining their original tribal dances and costumes. 17 tribal groups have participated. Documentation and pictures were kept.
