Papua New Guinea - Media Education Seminar
 On the weekend of 26-27 September, at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Port Moresby, there was a seminar on media education and social networks that highlighted the potential of these channels. The seminar was held on the initiative of Fr Ambrose Pereira, Delegate for Social Communications of the Provincial Delegation of the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
Among the subjects discussed were media ethics, digital identity and activity, writing articles for the web, the composition of photographic images and media awareness.
On the first day, Mario Braganza, an Indian volunteer, explained some tricks for writing articles for the web. He pointed out the risks, but also the opportunities, in media and social networks. In the afternoon, the director of Fiji Media Watch, Ms Agatha Ferei, held a workshop on advertising and marketing and how to use their resources.
On the second and final day, participants worked on photographic techniques, developed a plan of events to raise media awareness among their peers and began using blogs to interact in the network.
"I found these students competent and eager to learn about social media,” said Hayden Powick, a New Zealand computer specialist, who gave the final lessons. “In my country young people take these things for granted, and there is the risk that many problems arise through superficial use of the media. Now Papua New Guinea is on the verge of entering this communication revolution, and so it is a blessing to be able to address these issues in advance."

Argentina - Two awards for a video of the Salesian Bulletin
 The short film "Learn the art of living ", a joint production between the Salesian Bulletin and the Salesian Missions Office of Argentina, has won two awards in the "National Competition and Festival of Short Films - Youth and the World of Work." The competition was organized by the Communication Centre called ‘the Crujía’. Over 120 productions were entered from all across the country.
The film gathers the testimony of several young people who are taking part in the training activities of the Salesian works in Argentina. It reaffirms the value of apprenticeships in workshops – in trades that go from metallurgy and carpentry to design and fashion. The close presence of the educators generates bonds that strengthen the self-esteem of the young people and help in their integral development.
The presentation of the short films and the awards ceremony took place on 13 September in the Library of the National Congress. The video made by the Salesian Bulletin received the First SIGNIS Award for the transmission of human and Christian values.“Learn the Art of Living” also received mention as "a short audiovisual journalistic documentary on workshops." It acknowledged the quality of the communication of the production, its effectiveness in making known the value of apprenticeship, the efforts of young people and the commitment of the Salesian work.
The short documentary is one of many videos made entirely by the ArgentineSalesian Bulletin in collaboration with the Salesian Missions Office, two organizations that have endeavoured for several years to transmit "a look at the Salesian world and a Salesian look at the world"through audio-visual productions.

Animation - Letter from Fr Filiberto
Dear Friends,
During October we have received two items of news of great relevance for the Salesian Family: the beatification of Salesian Brother Stephen Sándor and the recognition of the virtues of Salesian Cooperator Attilio Giordani. Both of these events encourage us to give thanks and to seek personal holiness. Events of the kind deserve widespread diffusion of quality, both within the Congregation and in society at large. These figures of fulfilled and happy people are the best kind of communication for a society in need of hope and reasons for living.
And as far as the Department itself is concerned we have held two meetings of Provincial SC Delegates, one in Mumbai, India, the other in Hua Hin, Thailand. We continue to strengthen the province structures for SC from the point of view of teamwork and coordination between sectors, in areas of animation, formation, information and production, without overlooking authenticity of life of the communicator. We have effectively added a fifth area: “care and promotion of art and culture”. Another issue we have been working on and will attempt to bring to a conclusion in November is a document on “policies and conditions of use of ICT by consecrated and lay members who share the same mission and spirit”. We will see that you receive the draft version so that you can offer comment and further ideas before we complete this document.

Information: Italy - Fr Martelli New Editorial Director of Elledici
The Salesian Publisher Elledici yesterday announced the appointment of a new Managing Editor, Fr Albert Martelli, SDB. Fr Martelli has already worked in Elledici, as Director of the magazine Catechesis from 2001 to 2004, and for the past year, as head of magazines. Fr Martelli succeeds Fr Joseph Pelizza.
Since Elledici leftits original location at Leumann, Rivoli, and moved to modern new headquarters in Turin, it has continued on the path of renewal in logistics and ideas.
The new Editorial Director has held important positions in recent years as teacher of Salesian Pastoral Ministry in the Turin section of the Salesian Pontifical University, and as manager of projects and associations - as part of the National Civil Service and Salesian Youth Association - and of course also in communications, as a member of the Editorial Board of the Salesian Radio station Primaradio Piemonte.
He is the author of several essays, articles and publications that attest to his experience in teaching and catechesis, and in the publishing industry of which Elledici is a leader in Italy.
"The bicentenary of Don Bosco in 2015 is our starting point, said Fr Martelli, not to celebrate the past, but to be more effective in the present. (...) We want to be closer to the needs of our readers, especially teachers and ecclesial communities. The theme of education involves a wide audience. In general we want to catch more and more people who work with youth and in education. "
The Salesian publisher Elledici has over seventy years of experience in the field of education, catechesis, religious education and evangelization, aiming in particular at young people and their educators.

Information: Spain - Barcelona welcomes a new Delegation for Social Communication
On Thursday 10 October, the Salesian House of Can Prats, headquarters of the Barcelona Provincial, welcomed the members of the Delegation of Social Communication (CS) of the new Province of Mary Help of Christians. The setting up of this delegation is one of the first steps in the restructuring of the Provinces of Spain.
The meeting served to pool the tasks in the field of communication that the new delegation has scheduled in preparation for the unification of the Provinces which is expected to take place in May 2014. The work was guided by the Delegate, Fr José Luis Burguera, assisted by representatives of the Provincial Delegations of CS of Barcelona, Francesc Riu; Sevilla, Carlos Martin; and Valencia, Marta María Peirat.
The starting point was the setting up of the new delegation which is a pioneer in the process of unification and which accepts, among other things, the difficult task of tracing a path for the communications mission of the Salesians in Spain.
At first they reviewed the tasks that the Provincials have assigned to the Delegation, among them the development of a plan for the delegation itself. The main task will be to come up with the Provincial Plan of CS as a theoretical framework for all activities. Other tasks will include the development of a new corporate image, the opening of a new web portal, the creation of the Office of CS and the publication of a new provincial magazine.
They also shared the drawing up of an annual calendar for the initiation and presentation of different instruments of communication. They drew up an organizational chart for the work of the Delegation in this new situation. This will include translation services and information on each of the houses and different situations for all the members of this new Province of the Salesian Family.
The Barcelona province hosted the meeting which was attended by the Vice- Provincial. It included a visit to Edebé publishing house and to the room where Don Bosco stayed. The meeting ended in the late afternoon but the work can continue with the possibility of digital meetings, a new way of working that will become normal for the Delegation which is responsible for a large area.
The next meeting is scheduled for Valencia in the month of March 2014.

Formation: India - Don Bosco Communications South Asia (DBCSA) General Assembly
The Don Bosco Communications South Asia (DBCSA) General Assembly is being hosted by the Mumbai Province at Don Bosco Provincial House Matunga from 15-18 October, 2013. Fifty SDB delegates representing eleven Salesian provinces and four FMA delegates have gathered to discuss the theme “SOCIAL MEDIA AND SALESIAN YOUTH MINISTRY”.
The special dignitaries include Fr. Filiberto Gonzalez SDB, Councillor General for Social Communications; Br. Ephrem Santos SDB, his Secretary; Fr. Thomas Ellicherail SDB, SPCSA, Provincial Delegate for Social Communications and Fr. Godfrey D’Souza SDB, Provincial of the Mumbai Province.
The inaugural Mass was presided over by His Lordship Dominic Savio Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai. At the Inaugural Ceremony, Fr. Antony Earathra, SPCSA Communications Delegate, welcomed the delegates and situated this event as one happening at a historical moment as we prepare for the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth and the General Chapter (GC27). Fr. Gonzalez communicated the warm greetings and prayers from the Rector Major.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Conrad Saldanha, Principal Advisor to Don Bosco Centre for Learning, Kurla, Mumbai. He highlighted the cultural shifts undergone by the media of Social Communications, and the key trends in Social Media with the positive and negative impacts on the young. He challenged all to use Social Media to Promote the Gospel and, as Pope Francis says, “give the Church a digital presence”.
Other presentations took place later: “Social Media: Challenges and Opportunities in Digital Publishing”, by Mr. Yogesh Sahu; “Viral Marketing and Advertising: Strategies for Social Networks for Youth”, by Mr. Nishad Ramachandran; “Media and Education” by Sr. Phyllis Fernandes, FMA; “New Initiatives in Social Communication by the Church in India” by Fr. George Plathottam and finally “Social Media Secrets in Catholic Youth Ministry - 21st Century Catholicism” by Ralin DeSouza, SDB, Director BOSKON Communications, Goa.
The assembly witnessed the launch of two books: “Press and Social Responsibility in the North East” by Fr. George Plathottam, SDB, and “Petals and Pebbles in Human Parables” by Fr. Elias Dias, SDB.

Formation: Thailand - EAO Provincial Delegates begin their meeting with the General Councillor for Social Commu
On Monday, 21st October,the Provincial of Thailand, Fr. Paul Prasert, welcomed Fr Filiberto Gonzales and the other 18 delegates and members of the Social Communications Commissions from the provinces belonging to the East Asia Oceania Region.
The initial impression generated during the greetings and discussions of this group coming from diverse cultures and nations was characterized by openness, warmth, cheerfulness and optimism. Thanks go to the generous hospitality of the Thai confreres which also helped create such an atmosphere.
Fr Filiberto relayed the greetings of the Rector Major and the other superiors in the Generalate in Rome, mindful of the unity that all Salesians share in the charismatic vocation of St John Bosco, the communicator and apostle of the young.
The meeting then looked at the situation of the provinces and adapt a proactive approach that would foster synergy and collaboration in their respective Social Communication commissions, within the provinces and among the provinces of the EAO. It saw also how to carry out the task of documenting the artistic and cultural heritage in places where the Salesians are present, the preparations for the bicentennial celebrations and how the Salesians should behave when they use the Social networks.
The 9 provinces of the EAO sent their representatives except for Myanmar that had some difficulty. Cambodia and Japan sent more than one participant with a view to involving the lay collaborators more closely in the Salesian Social Communications System..
The first day was concluded with the celebration of Holy Mass, followed by a welcome dinner. Students from the adjacent school also came to do traditional welcome dances and present each participant with a garland of flowers.

Production: India - Launch of Book by a Salesian on Press and Social Responsibility
 On 25 September, former Chief Minister of Goa and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Shri Luizinho Faleiro, launched a book entitled Press and Social Responsibility authored by Fr George Plathottam, SDB.
The launch took place during the inaugural ceremony of the three-day “Kingdom Media Conference” held in New Delhi. About 250 delegates working in media, in India and abroad, participated in the event.
While complimenting the author for his timely and relevant work, Shri Faleiro said that the media revolution has changed the world, but media persons must provide the soothing balm and be like surgeons and healers who can repair the hole in the human heart that longs for peace and well being.
Speaking of his book, Dr. Plathottam said the social space in the newspapers is shrinking and there is need for greater social responsibility of the press. He stressed the role of journalists and all those who own the media or work there in bringing better values and ethics to the media. “The press, a profession hallowed by Mahatma Gandhi and many freedom fighters, is today being increasingly criticized for reporting blood dripping stories that deal with violence and crime instead of news about development, peace and people’s movements. This needs to be remedied”, he said.
The book, published by Segment Books, New Delhi, is based on a study through content analysis of nearly 25,000 newspaper reports from 312 issues of two major newspapers in Northeast India. It is part of the doctoral research done in the North Eastern Hill University by the author.
In his landmark research work, the author has not only examined the social responsibility of the press but has proposed ways to rebuild the image of the press at a time when the social space in newspapers is fast shrinking and compromise in the values of the press is on the increase.
Fr. George Plathottam, who spent three decades in Northeast India, now works as national secretary for communications at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and as Director of a national media training and research institute, NISCORT. He is a member of several academic and consultative boards related to media.

Production: Brazil - A double CD to raise awareness of Don Bosco
 In preparation for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Don Bosco, the Salesian Family in Brazil has prepared a special gift: a double CD of songs inspired by his life and works. The Conference of the Provinces of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Brazil (CISBRASIL) gave full support to the project, which was recorded in the studio at Comep-Paulinas.
The project was organized and coordinated by two Salesians, Fr Gildasio Mendes and Fr Osmar Bezutte, who accompanied the work with dedication both in the choice of songs and the recording. Many competent people from all over Brazil were invited to contribute to the project. The orchestra conductor, Antonio Karan, from Sao Paolo led a group of qualified musicians, including Dalva Tenório, Karla Fioravante and Andreia Zanardi, known collectively as God’s Singers. Other artistes such as Marcelo Mattos, Mariani, Luis Felipe, Jean and many others also lent their voices.
The first CD includes 13 songs well known to the Brazilian public, songs that have already been sung in homage to Don Bosco over the past few years by the young people and members of the Salesian Family. On the second CD there are 12 as yet unpublished songs that include dance, rap, pop, sertanejo ... a mix of rhythm and lyrics from various regions of the country.
The decision to mix various genres of music was not a random choice. It is intended to ensure that, as well as being a tribute to Don Bosco, the songs would also be played on radio and transmitted to the general public.
This is just one of many initiatives undertaken by the Salesian provinces in the country to raise awareness of the Saint of Youth, even outside traditional Salesian environments.
The tracks on the CD have already met some success and have been sought in Europe for translation into German.
