Dear brothers and friends, I greet you during the vespers of the feast day of Our Lady Help of Christians. I write to you from Buenos Aires while we celebrate the encounter of the editors of America. From the 24th April till the 24th May we have lived through a rich experience in the Communications Department: we have met with the European SDBs and FMAs in formation who are in Italy, we have had the encounter of the Provincials of the Northern and Central European Region in Lyon, we have had the meeting of the Provincial Delegates for Communication from all over Europe at Mestre, we have had the meeting of all those responsible for radios in America at Brasilia and the encounter of the editors of America at Buenos Aires. These meetings refer to various areas of the Salesian System of Social Communications (SSCS) which has been developed both at provincial and continental levels. First and foremost, there has been the contact with the governing body i.e. with the Provincials of the Northern and Central European regions. It served to stimulate reflection in this regard aswell as action regarding communication, it being a central element within the Salesian mission. Within the area of formation, we celebrated the seventh annual gathering of formation within the area of communication with more than 170 SDB and FMA in formation together with their formators. We reflected upon the theme for the World Day dedicated to Social Communication i.e. “‘The truth will set you free’ (Jn. 8, 32). False news and journalism of peace.” In the area of companies and productions, the radio directors reflected on the need to include the radio in the POI and the PEPSI, on the renewal and quality of the formation of the personnel and the technology in this regard, on the programming and the work of the equipe who are always committed to implement criteria of credibility, professionalism, quality, unity and creativity. In this same area, the directors of the publishing companies committed themselves to reflect upon the development of the editorial and books, technologies, readers, on forms of speech and writers, on the financing and the preparation and on the openness towards the rapid development within the communications area. There were also two other important initiatives around the feast for 150th anniversary since the building of the Mary Help of Christians Basilica: the video novena for our Mary Help of Christians sent worldwide and presented by the Rector Major as well as the presentation of the volume “La Citta’ di Don Bosco” exactly on the feast day of Our Lady and during the worldly Consulta of the Salesian Family held at Turin. The two events, both highly appreciated by the worldwide Salesian Family, were coordinated by ANS and a beautiful team of collaborators, experts and volunteers in various areas of communication.
