A bit of history:

The first Salesians arrived in Croatia in 1913 (Rovinj), after this in Rijeka (1918) and in 1922 Zagreb, capital of Croatia. In 1930 the first edition of the "Salesian Bulletin " in Croatian was published. Between the two world wars the work of the Salesians in Croatia broadened, and they opened many oratories, hostels, a novitiate. With the coming to power of the comunists in 1945 everything was suddenly suspended and forbidden. The only work allowed was the work in parishes, with considerable restrictions. All religious publishing was forbidden. The aspirants and Salesian clerics, sent away from their communities, found refuge with the Franciscans and in various dioceses. Despite everything, the number of the young Salesians began to grow again. So in 1970 the vice province was founded and in 1972 the province of St. John Bosco based in Zagreb. The first provincial house was near the theologate community in Knežija, close to the church of Mary Help of Christians. Due to the lack of space, the community transferred first to Podsused in the parish of St. John Bosco and from 1985 until 2003 it was in 101 Srebrnjak St.
After the fall of communism and the gaining of Croatian independence, democracy came but then a cruel war broke out (1991-1995). After getting back the old house where the oratory was in Knežija the conditions were right for the provincial hosue to return to its original location. Currently the provincial house is in Knežija, near the church of Mary Help of Christians.
