Focus 2007

Dosa - SSE01-10-2007

Project: DOSA Communications
Date of foundation: 2002
Place: Sevilla
Province: SSE

From 9th - 11th February 2007, the Province of Mary Help of Christians, Seville (SSE) was host to the Social communications delegation for the Iberian peninsula. This meetng of Provincial Delegates usually takes place at Don Bosco House, Madrid. However, as agreed at the meeting in October last year, one meeting per year would be held if possible in a different province.

Mary Help of Christians Province Seville, with the technical support of DOSA Communications, has launched a new formation initiative for those involved in education and ministry from Salesian Houses. By this we mean an online on-line learning platform, based on Moodle. Moodle is designed to help teachers create online courses also called online learning envrionments or, internationally, e-learning.

The idea came from the increasing difficulty noted by those involved in local Salesian works, of helping provide properly presented formation courses.

The first course to be developed using this system was by the Youth Ministry Delegation. It is called 'Pastoral animation in Salesian schools', with various sessions on-line, and practical activity in an education centre, covering the 75 hours that the course involves.

The 25 students who completed this on-line course had their first sessions between Wednesay 17 and Thursday 18 of January, in Antequera. The course concluded in September 2007.

Education to media use is an unavoidable and urgent task amongst all those involved in educating the young. Around twenty teachers from different schools in Mary Help of Christians Province Seville (SSE) began a course on 13th April in 'Educating to media use', offered by the Social Communication Provincial Delegation. This was the second course organised as Part of the ongoing formation plan for those involved in education in the Province. The course concluded on 7th September.

The twenty students (all teachers from Córdoba, Carmona, Campano, Linares, Sevilla-Triana, Sevilla-Trinidad, Huelva, Antequera, Algeciras, Jaén, Badajoz and La Palma del Condado) all worked either from school or home, gaining an introduction to the world of educommunication and, furthermore, various modules on television, film, radio and music, personal media, Internet, etc… It included sessions on techno-dependencies.

Since 2002, St. Dominic Savio Province, Córdoba and MHC Sevilla have set out to remain in the vanguard of Information and Communications Technology.

We become more aware each day that the world we live in poses threats and challenges that we have to face up to as sons of Don Bosco. As indicated in C. 43, "Our Founder had an instinctive grasp of the value of this means of mass education..."

In 2002, the then 'St Dominic Savio' Province Córdoba noted that there was a growing demand for services in the world of social communications and more practically, in the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT); they noted that these services required a strong financial commitment at the level and complexity of technology and business, other than the fact the the organisation and management of these services demands technical personnel of a highly specialised kind.

The solution proposed in order to keep up to date in the social communications field was to create an enterprise, dedicated to providing communications services. This entity would belong to the Province, which would name a governing board. It would be an independent entity, adequately registered to carry out its activities in a fully legal way. It would remain in strict relations with the Social Communications Delegation. Thus DOSA Communications S.C. came into existence

Over five years, DOSA Communications has taken on a variety of services covering communications needs of the Salesian mission: technical assessment, planning, product purchase, publishing, graphic design, multimedia, publicity formation…

DOSA Communications is the technical team behind, and maintains the Salesian Bulletin website, the web generator Dynamo used by all Salesian works in Sevile-SDB province, Madrid-SDB, León-SDB, Madrid-FMA and León-FMA, along with seventy other religious institutions (Franciscans, Marianists, Presentation Sisters, The Servants of the Immaculate, …)

Without doubt the most important value of this enterprise is its human resources. Currently there are six people but also a support team to help in administration and management. These cover most of the needs of an enterprise of this nature, both technical and formative.

The team grows with the creation of provincial delegations. Besides Córdoba, there is one in Sevilla. There is one planned for the Canary Islands.

The basic feature of this technical team is its strong Salesian accent. They all belong to the Salesian Family. They grew up in our works and activities of an education and evangelising kind: they have been pupils in our schools, or group leaders in oratories and youth centres.

The world of social communications puts in in a broad horizon. Don Bosco’s courage and enterprise encourages us to follow with work in this field. As Fr Viganò foretold in 1990, we need "a new understanding and a renewed cultural, apostolic effort in social communicatioin in the Congregation, according to our Rule of Life, by involving those repsonsible at local and provincial level, formators and delegates in this area" (as he told CG23). Amongst the likely means, the Salesian Province in the South of Spain has set out to improve the quality, structures and media in the SC field.
We hope it continues.
