|Project||The “Pokrova” orphan home|
The “Pokrova” orphanage was founded in the Byzantine Rite Salesian Delegation of Mary Help of Christians in 2006.
The name “Pokrova” (from Ukranian: Shelter, protection) comes from its position in fact, situated near the bell tower of the parish church known as “Pokrov [Protection] of the Blssed Virgn”. The Help of Christians is venerated under this title in the Byzantine tradition. It was significant to give this name of shelter and protection to a home which protected poor and abandoned young people lacking the warmth of the family home. Currently the House is aprt of the Blessed Philip Rinaldi Community in Lviv (Leopoli) in the Ukraine.
Fr Mykhaylo Chaban is the Rector and is helped by some other lay people, imitating Don Bosco's experience of family spirit, creating a family for youngsters who have none and who have been left to their own devices. There are now 15 boys between ages of 8 and 15 in the family.
The home offers many advantages to its young inhabitants. It provides for their needs, helps them feel they are in a family, takes care of their growth and education, and helps them grow up as good Christians. They too are children of Don Bosco who loves them as he did his own.
