Salesian Youth Movement - AJS

Project: Salesian Youth Movement - AJS
Date: AJS set up formally in 1998
Place: Porto Alegre
Dicastero: BPA

The AJS (in English, SYM) is the result of the lived experience of the Salesian tradition as well as an attentive response to the signs of the times. It is how the Salesian Province of Porto Alegre translates the Salesian Youth Movement into reality.

The AJS is in fact a network of youth groups united in a common interest which can be identified as Salesian Youth Spirituality and whoever gives witness to this. By belonging to the AJS, the groups come to know and experience the values of Salesian spirituality.

The AJS becomes a reality where there are groups of young people living out a group and ecclesial experience in an organised way, and in a Salesian way of living and being. It exists in our schools, social works, parishes and other educative and evangelising settings.

Those who take part in the AJS are nurtured with specific materials relating to Salesianity, with various faith education curricula, and by forming and preparing leaders, and offering volunteer experiences of a vocational, missionary and Salesian kind. This entire process is led by a Province Ministry Team and a Province Team specifically involved in organising Salesian Youth which includes Salesians, lay and youth leaders.

There are specific meetings in the Province to this end:

  • Setting up and planning.
  • Formation for group leaders.
  • Formation meetings dealing with volunteer experiences.
  • Reflection and planning meetings integrated into other meetings of Mission animation, vocation animation, Social Communication.
The Province-wide AJS is integrated with Salesian Youth Ministry in Brazil and with the Youth Sector of the Brazilian National Episcopal Conferencel (CNBB).
