The undersigned has willingly joined the desire of our superior because I am always happy when I can speak more intimately to our dear confreres.
You already know what I can tell you; I know nothing but to repeat to you how much our old superiors have taught us. From what they have learned directly, more or less, it is true, from our dear Don Bosco. Indeed, this year I have proposed more than just my poor word, to let the words of our Don Bosco be heard, let us hear each other, to be thus convinced with him if we really walk in the spirit of our dear Don Bosco, in the spirit of our dear society.
In September 1881 our Don Bosco, as you know, made one of his most important dreams and it is all written by his own hand, which revealed to him the grandiose future of our Congregation and also the dangers that threatened to destroy it. Do you remember? "Qualis esse debet, qualis esse periclitatur." And among the various maxims that have been announced especially in the end of the dream, there are these, which I remember: "Argumentum praedicationis, mane, meridie et vespere. Quot sunt verba signata, tot sint argumenta praedicationis ”.

Remember perfectly these words that I think we can therefore summarize in these other three short words that can be our program of action throughout our Salesian life: PREACH, PRACTICE and TRANSFER how precisely our Don Bosco taught us with his writings, with the word, especially by example.
This is why in our Spiritual Saints Exercises we want to draw ever closer to the mind, to the heart of our Don Bosco; hear his living word. This is what I propose to do precisely in these Holy Spiritual Exercises.
Allow another little thought: because we must insist on this preaching in the spirit of Don Bosco, in the spirit of our Congregation. Because you see - here we enter history - this morning we also talked about that. Sure, in not many years, - there is no need to make prophecies, - but our Congregation here in Japan will be in the hands of the Japanese. It therefore needs that now we, who are in the present conditions of growing these dear Salesian Japanese souls near us, really grow according to the spirit of our founder, according to the spirit of our Society; and therefore we need to PREACH, PREACH, PREACH what Don Bosco taught us but in a special way PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE; that our Japanese confreres see in us true examples of the Salesian; and then TRANSFER. Remember in the Mass of our Don Bosco: "What I have taught you, what you have heard from me, be handed down and performed."
Here is the reason I say that in these Spiritual Holy Exercises I set out to do.
In the first general chapter of 1877, Don Bosco wanted this first chapter to be celebrated with the greatest solemnity and invited, among others, the famous then, then, Father Franco of the Society of Jesus, at that time one of the most noted ascetics, most quoted so that he could also bring his contribution to the Chapter really succeeding well. And this good Father made a speech that unfortunately, not even in the minutes of the chapter, was noticed except the title. A speech on this theme: "It is necessary that at the beginning of your Congregation you become a Salesian conscience, a religious conscience".
Here, my good brothers, it is also with this thought, - that it was, I would say so, the first basic thought of that first general chapter to which Don Bosco attached the greatest importance being the first; the Congregation had recently been approved; - therefore I say, we too who really examine ourselves if we have this Salesian awareness, if we have this sense of responsibility in the exercise of our duties, in the exercise of the general duties of the Christian life, of our Salesian life; in the particular duties that are entrusted to each of us; we seek, I say, in these holy days to call ourselves to this; and then I said in my words, PREPARATION, giving a glimpse to all our Don Bosco, to all his preaching, those that are handed down to us in the 19-18 volumes written in the life of our Don Lemoine, of our Don Ceria; also at Buonenotti, a general overview.
But it struck me more, for what refers to the topic we want to discuss, this fact: from 1869 until 1884 that was the most troubled period of Don Bosco's life, - think: the approval of the Congregation, the the approval of the Rule, the communication of privileges, the foundation of the Institute of the daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Salesian cooperators, the sons of Mary, the struggles that it had to undergo even by the ecclesiastical authority - it is all included in this period and it is in this period in which there are a dozen, a dozen circulars actually written by our Don Bosco in which he at the very beginning of the congregation, feels in a certain way the need to make his children hear his word, so that they do not happen misunderstandings about the spirit that must arise,that must develop in our society, so that it can produce its fruits.
And then seeing that there was this beautiful manna of the Don Bosco circulars, Don Bosco, I say, wait: because obviously we too cannot go over them; we read them once or even more times, but to refresh them and really feel the living word of our father; to think that certainly, spiritually, we can imagine that he is here in our midst and that he will be happy to hear that the words he spoke to those first children of his are now like a very sweet echo that penetrates the minds and souls of his children here in Japan; I really think he will be happy and at the same time will be more than useful for us. Because, you see, the circulars of our Don Bosco are truly the program of our entire Salesian life.

Ma poi alla fine, quando Don Bosco l’ha pubblicata e l’ha resa nota a tutti i suoi figlioli, c’è la data del 6 giugno 1867, che era la solennità di Pentecoste.
24 maggio! Don Bosco voleva scegliere queste date che richiamano più la Madonna, che richiamano la nostra Ausiliatrice.
“Gli Apostoli furono lodati dal Salvatore e venne loro promesso un regno eterno, non perché abbandonarono il mondo, ma perché abbandonandolo si professavano pronti a seguirlo nelle tribolazioni come avvenne di fatto, consumando la loro vita nelle fatiche, nelle penitenze, nei patimenti, sostenendo per primi il martirio della fede.” Non dimentichiamo la festa di oggi, San Giacomo.
“Nemmeno con buon fine entra e rimane nella Società chi è persuaso di essere necessario alla Provvidenza. Ognuno se lo imprima bene nella mente e nel cuore, cominciando dal superiore generale fino all’ultimo dei soci: nessuno è necessario nella Società; Dio solo deve essere il capo, il padrone assolutamente necessario. Perciò i membri di essa devono rivolgersi al loro capo, al loro vero padrone, al Rimuneratore, a Dio, e per amore di lui, ognuno deve farsi iscrivere nella società; per amore di lui, lavorare, obbedire, abbandonare quanto si possedeva al mondo, per poter dire in fin di vita al Salvatore che abbiamo scelto per modello: "Ecce nos reliquimus omnia et secuti sumus te. Quid ergo erit nobis".
“Mentre noi diciamo che ognuno deve entrare in Società in base del solo desiderio di servire Dio, ma però, con l’intenzione di fare del bene a sè stesso, s’intende fare a sè stesso il vero bene, il bene spirituale ed eterno. Chi vi cerca una vita comoda, una vita agiata non entra con buon fine nella nostra Società; noi mettiamo per base la parola del Salvatore che dice: Chi vuole essere mio discepolo vada, venda quanto possiede nel mondo, lo dia ai poveri e mi segua”.
Non dimenticate. Perfezione di amore del cristiano: “Ama il tuo Dio, con tutta la tua mente, con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua volontà; e ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso.” Ecco la perfezione di amore cristiano. E Gesù benedetto a noi ha fatto sentire l’altra parola; ci ha dato tre mezzi di cui leggevamo per potere vincere le difficoltà spirituali in cui noi ci troviamo: “Va, vendi ciò che ti ostacola, Abneget!.....”
Abbiamo qui presenti i nostri cari confratelli che alla fine degli esercizi emetteranno i loro voti perpetui. Ieri ci dicevamo precisamente questo: è questo distacco assoluto, specialmente poi da noi stessi, dal nostro io, che richiede da noi il Signore. Ed è questo mistero, non solo di questa perfezione di amore, ma di questa perfezione religiosa, per cui noi ci consacriamo totalmente, come diceva il nostro San Francesco di Sales: “Se vedessi nel mio cuore anche solo una piccola fibra che non fosse per questo, la strapperei"...
A questo punto la registrazione non è intelligibile. Furono eliminati 2’ 15”. Pensiamo che siano queste parole della suddetta circolare ai confratelli.
(“Ma dove andare, dove seguirlo, se non aveva un palmo di terra ove riporre lo stanco suo capo? Chi vuol essere mio discepolo, dice il Salvatore, mi segua colla preghiera, colla penitenza e specialmente rinneghi se stesso, tolga la croce delle quotidiane tribolazioni e mi segua. Abeneget semetipsum, tollat crucem suam quotidie, et sequatur me. Ma fino a quando seguirlo? Fino alla morte e, se fosse mestieri, anche fino ad una morte di croce.”)
…Dobbiamo essere disposti a questo; e abbiamo promesso solennemente al Signore che se anche questo avvenisse siamo pronti; non è così?
“Entrato un socio con queste buone disposizioni, deve mostrare senza pretese ed accogliere con piacere qualsiasi ufficio gli possa essere affidato: insegnamento, studio, lavoro, predicazioni, confessioni in chiesa, fuori di chiesa, le più basse occupazioni devono assumersi con ilarità e prontezza di animo perché Iddio non guarda la qualità dell’impiego, ma guarda il fine di chi lo copre. Quindi tutti gli uffici sono ugualmente utili perché ugualmente meritori agli occhi di Dio.
Miei cari figlioli, abbiate fiducia nei vostri superiori; essi debbono rendere stretto conto a Dio delle vostre opere; e perciò essi studiano la vostra capacità, le vostre propensioni e ne dispongono in modo compatibile alle vostre forze, ma sempre come loro sentono per la maggior gloria di Dio e a vantaggio delle anime.”
Ecco miei buoni confratelli la circolare prima, possiamo dire, che ha scritto il nostro Don Bosco ai suoi figlioli, e vediamo che ha messo la base, la base assoluta: “Santificazione dell’anima propria per la maggior Gloria di Dio e in seguito per la salute delle anime.” Primo e secondo articolo delle nostre costituzioni; riflettiamo su questo miei buoni confratelli. E rinnoviamoci in questo spirito di consacrazione totale nostra al Signore.
Il nostro venerato Rettor Maggiore (Don Ziggiotti nel marzo-aprile 1955), nel mezzo della sua visita che ancora ci richiama tanti bei momenti passati con lui. Riprendo le sue parole, i suoi consigli.
Nella conferenza che tenne ai confratelli aventi una direzione, lasciava questo ricordo; e siccome ognuno di noi nel suo ambito ha le sue responsabilità, di superiorità, mi sembra che possano far bene per tutti:
“Per chi ha la responsabilità di direzione ha come primo dovere quello di amministrare bene sè stesso. Dobbiamo fare questo lavorio essenziale su noi stessi. Deve essere secondario e sarà dimenticato? Questo no; Dio non s’inganna. Egli vede l’animo del nostro lavoro; ed è questo che egli vuole. Purtroppo noi attendiamo tanto a fare, a strafare, e forse anche a malfare, e trascuriamo la parte più importante, il nostro lavoro personale; insegniamo, predichiamo per gli altri e poi siamo noi che non facciamo quello che diciamo e magari ci lamentiamo che gli altri non ci seguono. La più bella predica è fare noi quello che diciamo, se nò è inutile.”
Collegate questo con le parole che abbiamo sentito dal nostro Don Bosco.
E come conclusione, miei cari confratelli, mi sembra che dobbiamo pensare proprio così: Santifichiamoci e saremo in grado di santificare gli altri. E badate, saremo in grado di santificare gli altri in proporzione della nostra santità. Ecco un pensiero che deve starci fisso nella mente e nel cuore; e più che tutto nelle nostre opere.
È qui vedete il vero senso di responsabilità e di convinzione che dobbiamo avere sempre presente a noi stessi; certo, ci siamo fatti Salesiani per assicurare sempre più e meglio la salvezza dell’anima nostra; ma come lavoro salesiano, come lavoro missionario, come lavoro sacerdotale, certo, vogliamo anche lavorare per il bene delle anime che il Signore ci vorrà affidare affinchè tutto cooperi alla sua Gloria.
E allora ecco la piccola domanda; facciamola al nostro San Francesco di Sales e al nostro Don Bosco, riassumendo i pensieri che abbiamo udito questa mattina come commento del Pater noster:
“La santità dipende dall’umile e quotidiana osservanza dei doveri del proprio stato, a tempo e luogo e solo per amore del Signore.”
Badate, che nello spirito di San Francesco di Sales, che Don Bosco ha preso tutto, l’osservanza del dovere, dobbiamo avere presente che deve essere un qualche cosa di compiuto, di preciso, non così come un quid di meccanico, un quid di cose che serve per vivere alla giornata. Notate le ultime parole: “Per amore del Signore.” È questo che deve santificare tutto il nostro dovere, che deve santificare e farci fare dei meriti, anche quando nell’esecuzione del dovere noi triboliamo. La santità dipende dall’umile e quotidiana osservanza dei doveri del proprio stato, quelli che ci sono affidati , a tempo e luogo e solo per amore del Signore.
